Sometimes, I’m given a challenge to paint a certain piece a certain way, or it could be a commission request, or maybe an image or an idea that’s floating around in my head. Often I sit down and create a series of paintings based on the inspiration.
Now I’ve read somewhere that in order to do a complete series it should consist of about 50 pieces. So my series tend to be much smaller than that. It is not unusual for me to pull together up to twenty paintings based on the idea. Not to say I wouldn’t re-visit it later and continue on.
Another part of my process is to work on several pieces at the same time. I like that it lets me add different things and elements to the works, extending the creativity a little bit further and to extend the continuity across multiple pieces.
Going “Green”
Recently, I was given the task to create a small “green” painting. So as I was out in Victoria helping my parents as I started to design this small series. I was working with limited materials, and tools, but wanted to think of re-using items to go with the green idea, and the colour green.
I wanted to incorporate a feeling of layer, not just of paint, but of materials. I used holes and cuts in the paper to allow the viewer to get a glimpse underneath the paper. I added elements to puncture the structure of the paper creating depth. In some instances sewing in materials, or in others the use of staples.
The seven paintings that I created in the green series are each 5″ x 5″ and are immediately for sale. Each one is already matted and framed in beautiful black frames for only $100 each. You can view all seven in my gallery.
