Fire Fire Fire
One of my businesses is Real Estate which typically doesn’t inspire art. We have many rentals that my husband and I have been managing over the last twelve years. In October someone decided to set a fire in the garage of one the rentals, which they used gas to make sure it spread to the house.
We were very happy that all the tenants got out of the house safely. But the repercussions of the damages has hit us very hard. As I sift through the devastated garage (including a sweet little piano) I keep in mind the inspiration that grabbed me in New York.
The burned timbers, and chunks of charcoal are beautiful in their destruction. Some of which have made their way into my home garage awaiting new application in an upcoming Arson Series. And why do I do this? My artwork often moves along with the rhythm and emotion in my life. From playful pieces that project a sense of humor, to anger series that allow my frustrations of life to become the underlying base of a painting. My artwork deals with mood and emotion, inspiration and laughter. The abstract nature of my work gives me freedom to express myself.

I completed another series of my large Alcohol Inks. The fluid motion of the ink forces me to sit back a bit and see what the medium is going to do with the elements I introduce. From dabbing with paper towel, or blowing the ink into motion, these pieces are dictated by the mood of my surroundings and practice.
Parting Thought
Many things influence art, not just emotions. Other artists are of great inspiration to me. Often I see something that an artist is doing and try to create something similar. This is not unusual. I was told once that “Everything has been done before”. The trick is taking things you like and making them your own by pushing them a bit further so that it’s not a copy, but a new expression.
